The ability to report to The Dalles is required when business or operational needs are dependent on onsite activities. May be required to be onsite during training period.

What we are looking for:

ODF is looking for a Forest Manager 2 – Unit Forester to provide leadership through operational oversight, coordination and direction of program activities for The Dalles Unit of the Central Oregon District within the Department of Forestry. This includes maintaining political and operational relationships with agencies, cooperators, and landowners at the Local, State and Federal levels.

These goals and related duties are in the areas of overseeing all programmatic functions administered within the Protection from Fire and Forest Resource Programs in the Unit’s geographical area; directly supervising, directing, and monitoring the work of subordinate managers, unskilled, skilled, administrative, technical, and professional employees assigned to the various programs. This position is also responsible for developing and reviewing plans and purchases, and overseeing the implementation of plans and strategies at the Unit level to accomplish agency goals and objectives that are established from the Board of Forestry – Forestry Program for Oregon (FPFO), the Agency Strategic Plan and Department and FPFO Mission and Vision statements.

Minimum Qualifications:

Six (6) years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, forest management, etc., which include assisting with a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation;

OR

Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and three (3) years of natural resource experience in areas such as wildland fire suppression, or forest management which includes which include assisting with a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, and d) budget preparation.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout.  If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships and partnerships with diverse stakeholders to include other government agencies, non-profits and tribal governments.

  • Effective communicator. Ability to provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.

  • Experience and ability to perform effective public speaking skills.

  • Experience with supervision of seasonal, technical, and professional level workforce including sub-ordinate managers.

  • Ability to set priorities during high stress, crisis management, fire, and other emergency situations.

  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Familiarity with East side fire regimes/forestry. East of the cascades fire experience.
