An Environmental Specialist job is available with The City of Fort Worth (Water Department Customer Care / Pretreatment Section). This position is with the Industrial Wastewater Monitoring team in the Pretreatment section. This position would be responsible for conducting inspections and collecting wastewater samples, performing field analysis, assist staff with scheduled and random sampling and inspections of industries. 

The position will be responsible for sampling, monitoring, inspections, surveys and investigations associated with the Biosolids Drying Facility. They will assist with verifying compliance with state and federal wastewater regulations, and act as liaison with the Water Laboratory. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in biology, chemistry, and environmental science.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Must pass Drug Screen and Physical.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience in field of water, wastewater or pretreatment.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment and collection / distribution systems.
  • Experience with lab data processing and reporting.

The Environmental Specialist job responsibilities include:

  • Collects wastewater samples at industrial facilities and/or various field sites.
  • Performs field analysis and preservation of wastewater samples.
  • Document field activities in a detailed and accurate fashion.
  • Operates in a team environment, both with an assigned team member and independently.
  • Monitor sample schedule, track due dates and maintain organized work environment.
  • Processes sample related lab data.
  • Assists with wastewater investigations.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, unsanitary conditions, workspace restrictions, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor even when dealing with upset customers/citizens.

Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
