Cameronbridge is Diageo’s only grain distillery in Scotland and the site must be able to resolve any utility or compliance issues rapidly and continually operate at the highest possible efficiencies. Cameronbridge has added complexity with strict permit conditions through its PPC (Pollution, Prevention and Control) permit, which is wide ranging including effluent discharge, air pollution, and abstraction from the local River Leven. Looking at the context of Cameronbridge in Diageo’s world-wide production footprint, the site due to its manufacturing size is an increasingly important contributor to global environmental work streams and CSR initiatives which are aiming to establish the company on the right trajectory to achieve its ambitious environmental targets.
About the role
As the Environmental BL, you will be a member of the leadership team reporting to the Operation’s Director and you will lead Cameronbridge distillery’s environmental performance. You will be ultimately responsible for driving environmental performance at Cameronbridge – a globally significant site to Diageo. The role ensures that environmental compliance and sustainability are embedded into every layer of performance for Cameronbridge. The role will also act as the primary interface with regulators and key stakeholders, working closely with Operations Managers and bioenergy plant.
As part of the site leadership team, this role is critical in simplifying and translating Diageo’s global ambition into local impact and execution, ensuring all site-based teams understand their role in contributing to environmental performance and overall balanced scorecard for the site.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategy & Leadership
- Performance Management: Ensuring that Cameronbridge operates at the highest levels of environmental performance, and achieves benchmark status in terms of cost and environmental impacts. E.g. Litre of water used per litre of alcohol distilled (L/LA). You will lead a range of focussed improvement project teams to deliver agreed targets
- Digital Enhancement: Collaborating with site digital lead to develop existing site digital infrastructure to improve the visual management of environmental performance on site making it easier for the team to succeed. E.g. STRATA (Cotopaxi)
- Strategic Investment: Build and develop proposal’s with Business Development Manager to further mitigate environment risk’s to enhance compliance and performance. E.g. plans to drive site performance further away from permit limits.
- Budget control: will management spend with key partners in accordance with the AOP for Grain & Bio PPLA.
Stakeholder Management & Engagement
- Act as site environmental lead for managing relationships with environmental regulators and other environmental stakeholders (e.g., utility providers, local groups)
- Proactively lead and engage with external partners such as, but not limited to, Fife Council, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), Scottish water, Forth Fisheries Board, River Leven Trust. E.g. key point of contact for SEPA Local Officer
- Support development of strong culture for site environmental awareness through exceptional level of employee engagement. E.g. simplified training packs and one point lessons
Operational Compliance & Risk Management
- Permit Control: Ensure that all environmental regulatory and compliance standards are met or surpassed, including PPC A Permit management, UK ETS (data management and notification), and CAR (Controlled Activities Regulation).
- Data Assurance: Ensure audit readiness and accurate reporting, both internal and external. This involves assessing current data requirements and optimising this through digital solutions that are reliable and easily navigated. E.g. effluent reporting data required through PPC Permit.
- Own and gatekeep the Environmental management system on site, ensuring the site is operating to not only legislative requirements but also upholding the Diageo Global Risk Management standards. Evolve and enhance this system to make adherence more achievable and use teams on site to drive accountability to follow the management system. E.g. Waste Management

- Proven track record of coaching and facilitation skills.
Functional Capabilities & Experience (preferable):
- Strong and demonstrated Project Management skills, with ability to lead various diverse projects, on differing timelines and have a proven track record of doing so.
- Capability to consider change management implications from a cross-site perspective, using engagement tools and techniques.
- Degree qualified.
- Experience across a range of technical/ operational / environmental roles including process operations, engineering, and project management.
- Familiarity in managing a manufacturing operation to a set of environment permit conditions.
- An understanding of either distilling processes, energy or wastewater management & contract management is advantageous.
