Position Summary

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

The System Operations Engineering (SOE) team develops solutions that ensure the reliable operations of the Duke Energy Indiana and Duke Energy Ohio/Kentucky Transmission Grids. SOE provides engineering, operational, compliance, and scheduling expertise to ensure the transmission system can withstand all challenges including energy emergencies, both planned and unplanned outages, extreme weather, new technologies, and more. 

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.  Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.  Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in project development meetings providing operational input.
  • Perform high-quality outage studies with the intent to become an SME of the Ohio/Kentucky Transmission grid.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to facilitate capital project execution and maintenance scheduling while ensuring compliance with transmission system operating constraints and reliability requirements.
  • Provide training assistance to System Operators as needed
  • Act as an SME and Owner of various Operating plans and Procedures including participating in NERC MRRE audits and internal spot checks.
  • Design and implement custom analytical tools and applications to enhance operational efficiency and decision-making capabilities within the Energy Control Center (ECC).
  • Support various PJM operating committees and working groups providing input and feedback regarding Duke Energy positions.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Candidates graduating by December 2025 can be considered

Desired Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree preferred

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.  
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility
