ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Electrician position at the City of Tucson’s General Services Department maintains electrical equipment and control systems for city buildings and facilities. This position is responsible for performing reactive, preventative and scheduled maintenance, installations, and responding to system failures.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Electrical Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilizes tools including but not limited to multimeters, meggers, circuit tracers, and blue stake tracers to identify electrical discrepancies, troubleshoot, and to repair and maintenance light fixture components, power distribution systems, and emergency power systems at various city locations.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints in order to make electrical installations, troubleshoot circuitry and to identify power. Installs various power distribution, lighting system components and devices, electrical panels, and breakers. Uses approved methods of installation for underground, concealed, and surface mounted raceways, including Electrical Metallic Tubes (EMT). 

  • Installs approved conduit fittings and supports, including rigid, non-metallic, flexible metal, and liquid tight flexible conduits, as required by code. Installs various types of receptacles, switches, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), and outlets. Performs lighting retrofits and installations of new lighting control components including various switches, time clocks, photocells, and sensors.

  • Performs scheduled maintenance on electrical distribution systems and equipment and uses databases to track work order progress. Appraises projects and provides cost estimates to requestors including Mayor & Council, city manager, and executive leadership for City of Tucson owned facility improvements.

  • Troubleshoots and performs tests to identify, inspect, and analyze electrical system discrepancies. Proposes solutions and establishes plans for repairs and replacements before electrical systems failure.

  • Reviews Arizona 811 blue stake requests regarding City of Tucson electrical lines and responds by marking buried lines in accordance with Arizona 811 requirements; informs requestor of blue stake results. Records and adjust electrical line's actual locations on the City of Tucson’s digital maps. 

  • Attends City of Tucson safety, department and unit meetings, and other required training related to the safe use of tools and equipment. Optimizes productivity by maintaining the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of assigned vehicles, keeping workspaces clean and organized, and inspecting the condition of tool inventory.

  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. 

Working Conditions:

Work schedule may require early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call shifts.


Often works under the following conditions: Indoor and outdoor work with exposure to physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise, and unfavorable odors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Six (6) months post high school
Experience: Four (4) years of directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
License/Certifications: Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License

Preferred Qualifications:Experience in electrical systems 

Arc Flash training

Lockout/Tagout training

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 1st Aid training

Aerial Lift training

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Electrical Safety training

Demonstrated understanding of power generation systems

Demonstrated understanding of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems

Demonstrated knowledge of National Electrical Code

Demonstrated knowledge of electrical safety work practices
