Director of Project Management

Job Title: Director of Project Management

Department: Operations / PMO
 Reports To: SVP of Operations / VP of Engineering
 Location: Chattanooga, TN or Atlanta, GA
 Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview

The Director of Project Management is responsible for leading Mueller’s Project Management Office (PMO) and overseeing the successful delivery of strategic initiatives across the company. This individual will establish project management standards, mentor project managers, and ensure that all projects are executed on time, within scope, and within budget. The Director will act as a key liaison between Mueller’s executive leadership and project teams to drive alignment, accountability, and measurable business outcomes throughout our U.S. manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive project management framework that supports organizational strategy and business goals.
    • Define and maintain project governance, reporting structures, and key performance metrics.
    • Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritize and align projects with company objectives.
  • Operational Oversight:
    • Lead a team of project and program managers, ensuring consistent application of best practices and methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, Hybrid).
    • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of enterprise-level initiatives across departments.
    • Monitor project performance and proactively identify risks, dependencies, and resource constraints.

  • Process Improvement:
    • Continuously assess and optimize project management processes, tools, and templates to improve efficiency and delivery quality.
    • Implement lessons learned and change management practices to drive organizational improvement.
  • Stakeholder Management:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for project status updates, issue escalation, and executive reporting.
    • Foster collaboration and communication between cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and executive sponsors.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing project management professionals.
    • Mentor team members and promote a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous learning.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Management, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience:
    • 10+ years of progressive experience in project management, including at least 5 years in a leadership or PMO role.
    • Proven track record of leading complex, cross-functional projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications: PMP, PgMP, or PMI-ACP preferred; Lean Six Sigma or Agile certifications a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Expertise in project portfolio management and resource planning.
    • Proficiency with project management tools
    • Ability to influence and negotiate with executive stakeholders and drive consensus.
  • Travel:  this position is required to travel to our U.S. plants 25-50% of the time.

  • On-time, on-budget delivery rate of major initiatives and capital projects.
  • Improvement in organizational project success rate.
  • Employee engagement and retention within the PMO team.
  • Executive satisfaction with PMO performance and reporting quality.
