Position Overview:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Operations, the Director of Laboratory Operations will be responsible for overseeing the expansion, management, and operation of all STR hardware labs across multiple locations. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing processes, managing capital budgets and equipment, developing a strategic plan, and implementing a vision for utilization and interaction of various labs across STR’s geographically distributed sites. As STR focuses on national security solutions, the Director will develop, execute, and operate in a manner informed by deep understanding of what is expected when delivering solutions to the National Security Community. The Director will work closely with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and multiple business units to align lab infrastructure and operations with the company's strategic and programmatic vision. The Director will ensure all labs are properly equipped and staffed to support company goals.

Location: Woburn, MA (preferred). Basing at other STR sites is possible with increased travel: Arlington, VA; Palm Bay, FL; or Atlanta, GA

Key Responsibilities include:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide strategic leadership, growth, direction, and mentorship to the hardware laboratory operations team across multiple locations. This team includes Site Lab Managers and technicians.
  • Define and track key performance indicators and other metrics of laboratory operations to ensure alignment with business goals and identify areas for improvement. Present findings to senior leadership.
  • Develop long-term strategies for the growth and development of STR's hardware labs, including opportunities for innovation and improvement in lab operations and processes.
  • Work closely with the CTO to align lab operations with the company's strategic goals and programmatic needs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding hardware lab operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, multi-disciplinary teams, including technical (research, production), Quality Assurance, Facilities, and Finance, to support company initiatives and projects.
  • Occasional travel to STR sites with hardware labs will be required to evaluate and address site-specific operational needs and challenges.

Operational Excellence:

  • Develop and implement standardized processes and best practices for operating and managing hardware labs.
  • Work with the Site Lab Managers to determine the allocation of equipment and resources across various lab sites, ensuring optimal utilization.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • In collaboration with leadership and Engineering organizations, develop corporate-level quality control and assurance programs.
  • Develop and implement quality control and assurance programs specific to laboratory operations to ensure accurate and reliable support to programs.
  • Prepare for and conduct regular internal audits and inspections to identify and address any compliance or quality issues. Support internal independent audits.

Budget and Financial Management:

  • Oversee allocated Capital Expenditure (CapEx) and Operational Expenditures (OpEx) budgets. Work with the CTO, technology Division Leaders, Program teams, and Lab Managers to define and prioritize purchases. Exercise CapEx approval authority.
  • Monitor and control expenditures, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Prepare and present budget reports and financial analyses to senior management.

Safety and Risk Management:

  • Closely collaborate with the STR Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) specialist to ensure lab operations are safe and compliant with OSHA and other relevant regulations or laws.
  • Promote a culture of safety within the hardware labs, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to mitigate potential hazards and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Support regular safety training and drills led by the EHS specialist to ensure staff are prepared to handle emergencies.

Required Skills and Experience:

Minimum Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, operations management, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in lab operations, hardware development, or related roles, including 5+ years in leadership positions.
  • Demonstrated experience managing laboratories supporting national security (e.g., Defense) activities.
  • Demonstrated experience working across program maturities, ranging from prototype through LRIP.
  • Eligible for security clearance up to TS/SCI.

Preferred Knowledge and Certifications:

  • IPC/J-STD familiarity.
  • ISO 9001 or AS9100 experience.

 

Pay Information:

Full-Time Salary Range: $200,000 - $255,000

The salary range listed is based on external market data. Offers are based on factors, such as but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, training, key skills/critical skills, security clearances, and prevailing market and business conditions.
