A role in Buying means working with several diverse vendors to choose the best product mix, both in-store and online. We help determine where to localize, while calibrating market positioning and acting as brand managers. Here, you’ll own a wide SKU count so that your work is varied and challenging. Through cross-functional collaboration, instinct and creativity, you will be the expert on the guest, the market and the competition. 

A Merch Buying Director helps create omni-channel growth by planning profitable and locally relevant assortments using your grasp of guest shopping behavior, assortment requirements and competitors. You will influence and negotiate with vendors to achieve results and identify gaps and opportunities. Your flexibility in reacting to business results and your ability to translate financial metrics and data into actionable strategies will be critical. You will lead cross-functional teams to drive category results while managing progress toward sales and margin goals. Your partnerships with product designers and/or category managers and vendors will help guide product development as you source appropriately for your category. You will lead Associate Buyers and Senior Merchandise Specialists; and interact with the Pricing and Promotion Center of Excellence, Planning, Site Merchandising, the Item Center of Excellence and many other expert partners in support of your promotional planning work across channels.

Role Overview:

  • Newly created Pets Director Role
  • Buying responsibility will be part of the role, the portfolio includes established national brands, differentiated emerging brands, and strong owned brand
  • The role will include direct report responsibilities, 1 L5 buyer, 2 L4 AB’s and 1 L2 SMS
  • This role will also have key division and pyramid captainships responsibilities

About you:

  • 8+ years of Merchandising experience
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills, with a track record of leveraging insights to build resilient growth plans
  • Exceptional collaboration skills to partner with cross-functional teams and vendors of all sizes
  • Experience with pyramid or enterprise level leadership, including complex CFT management
  • Flexibility, resiliency and nimbleness; comfortable working in “grey areas” that are constantly changing
  • Leadership experience, commitment to developing high-performing and inclusive teams

  • Merchandising Depth: Does this person have the depth of core merchandising experience that will allow them to quickly drive impact in the role and develop the next generation of merchandising leaders?
  • Trend Expertise: Brings expertise in identifying and interpreting emerging trends, transforming insights into innovative, guest-facing products. Skilled at anticipating consumer needs and translating market dynamics into solutions that delight the guest and drive consumption.
  • Cross Functional Leadership: Demonstrates exceptional cross-functional leadership by guiding complex teams beyond divisional boundaries and driving results without direct authority. Recognized as a trusted leader who fosters alignment and can serve as a proxy for senior decision-making roles.

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
