About the Role

The Content Development Manager (CDM) is a subject matter expert in content development and/or legal practice and industry. The CDM is responsible for overall content acquisition/commissioning, management of author relationship, customer relationship and content development initiatives for Hong Kong business.

The CDM is a market-facing role, and requires regular interfacing with customers, authors, and internal teams mainly Editorial Operations, Product, Sales, Marketing and Global Operations. The CDM is the key stakeholder in relation to content development and strategy within their portfolio and is expected to lend their expertise and input in driving business growth.

The CDM owns the relationship with authors and contributors within their portfolio; ensuring content delivered by authors meet quality standard, timeliness in line with Publishing Calendar and annual budget. The CDM is also responsible for the output of Practice Area Leads and Legal Editors under his/her supervision in meeting business objectives.

Responsibilities

Content Commissioning & Acquisition

  • Obtaining new authors and content relevant to market and business needs
  • Managing authors including commissioning and decommissioning authors, authors ’succession planning, and building healthy pipeline of potential authors
  • Manage contracts, licensing, fees and royalties payable related to content commissioning activities; ensuring compliance to internal policy and processes
  • Own the publishing calendar and ensure all commissioning and publishing activities adheres to timeline; quality and terms & conditions of commissioning

Practice Area Expertise

  • Demonstrate and articulate subject matter expertise in the practice area relevant to portfolio;
  • Keep abreast of legal developments and industry trends; able to propose content enhancement, new topics and potential new content/products based on market insight and data
  • Support the sales and marketing, Product teams with information relating to content and Practice Area

Content Development & Strategy

  • Develop and articulate content strategy and requirements; building clear content roadmap and acquisition plan aligned to business and product strategy
  • Apply knowledge and customer insights to deliver content to ensure currency, relevance and accessibility for all products
  • Lead Customer Discovery (CDI) and market research and competitive landscape related to content;

Financial Budgeting and Cost Planning

  • Assist in annual budget and RF cycle and Investment review; providing quality input on capital, prepub and OPEX requirements related to Content
  • Manage department and commissioning budget ensuring ROI and metrics are met;
  • Provide monthly revenue forecast and input on publishing calendar, setting price fix and mitigating risks and potential revenue impacting delays
  • Drive additional revenue generating initiatives, if any

People Management

  • Lead and Manage team performance to ensure key deliverables are met
  • Train and develop team members; drive employee engagement and productivity

Skills & Requirements:

  • Tertiary Education Qualification required (LLB preferred)
  • Advanced skills in MS Office suites; interest and passion in technology and AI
  • Excellent command in English (written and verbal) and Chinese
  • Sound working knowledge of publishing workflow from idea conception through to receipt by customer
  • Minimum 6 years in legal practice and/or commercial management experience
  • Experience in content or product development would be advantageous
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in project management and an ability to work within tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking;
