Controls or operates machinery or equipment to assist with manufacturing, packaging, and other steps along a production line. May be expected to handle heavy machinery.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Chemical operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the processes to produce the chemicals within the Calvert City Acetylenics Plant.  Assignment includes chemical plant production, as well as monitoring of site wastewater treatment and utilities operations. 
  • Chemical operators work a rotating 12-hour shift. Shift assignments are from 7AM to 7PM (days) and 7PM to 7AM (nights). Adequate time is provided to allow for changeout into work clothes, and shower at the end of a work shift. Overtime coverage is required for vacation, sick, or other relief.
  • Chemical Operators at the Calvert City Acetylenics Plant rotate through varying operating positions.  Currently these positions include control room operator, field operator, and formulations operator.
  • Chemical operators monitor the chemical process equipment, including reactors, distillation columns, storage tanks, and other associated vessels and equipment. Process equipment is operated within the established operating parameters as outlined in manufacturing directions, consequence of deviation documentation, and process testing.
  • Chemical operators are largely self-directed, supported by day operators and the production engineering manager.  The shift operates with high level of autonomy; requiring risk assessment, decision making, prioritization, and action delegation within the shift team.
  • Ability to understand and operate PLCs and Honeywell DCS.
  • Comply with required safety activities for individual contributors as defined in the Calvert City Plant Safety Process. Proactively report on safety activities (observations, near misses, work orders, etc). Chemical operators may be called upon to complete routine safety checks of specific equipment (safety showers, PSV visual inspections, cranes, ladders, etc.). 
  • Responsible for the safe transfer of chemicals to/from containers. This may include raw material railcars/trucks, finished goods railcars/trucks, and tank to tank transfers.
  • Responsible for issuing work permits as required to maintenance and/or contractors.
  • Responsible for safely preparing equipment for maintenance or construction work.  Includes field verification prior to issuing permit and field verification when work is complete.
  • Must maintain good housekeeping standards plantwide and, especially, within assigned area. Responsible for participating in required training. This training will include but is not limited to:
  • Initial training, Refresher training , Safety training as required by Evonik, OSHA, EPA, etc
  • Process training as required for capital projects and/or management of change. Empowered to take responsibility for the environmental/safety of themselves and others and have the following specific responsibilities:​
  • Understand and follow site EH&S rules
  • Understand individual safety responsibilities of job
  • Comply with safety instructions of management
  • Participate in department safety communication program
  • Report all accidents, injuries, and near misses to management
  • Stop, correct, and report hazards or unsafe acts

REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate degree and/or technical trade certification with 2+ years of experience within an OSHA PSM facility preferred. Operating experience in a plant of similar complexity may substitute
  • Demonstrated capacity to evaluate operating scenarios, consider options, and make critical decisions
  • Capability to perform well on a self-directed work team
  • Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shift and, at times, work moderate level of overtime
  • Possesses basic computer skills (ability to read & respond to email, prepare / edit documents in MS Office, and complete computer-based training)
  • Fit for duty, which includes ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb stairs, ladders, and work outside
