THIS IS A PART-TIME 17.5 HOURS/WEEK POSITION.

The Garden-Based Learning Educator is employed by Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Schenectady County and delivers Cornell University’s garden-based curriculum to youth in after-school programs, primarily during afternoons and early evenings. Year-round, the educator leads hands-on established lessons that involve planting, caring for gardens, and exploring nutrition and environmental topics. During the summer, the focus shifts to guiding students in growing, harvesting, preparing, and selling produce at a small market stand, helping them develop practical job and life skills. The role also includes performing seasonal gardening tasks such as preparing beds, transplanting crops, weeding, managing pests, harvesting, and winterizing gardens.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in related field. High school diploma/GED equivalent and 1-year related experience may substitute for an associate’s degree.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Ability to meet the occasional travel requirements associated with this position.  A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required.

  • Ability to work primarily afternoons and early evenings during the school year and daytime hours during the summer, with occasional flexibility to work additional daytime or weekend hours as program needs arise.

  • Program Skills: Able to deliver and organize programs, meet goals and deadlines, complete required reports, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively as part of a team.

  • Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office, databases, social media, virtual/video conferencing, internet, and email.

This position takes place in informal classroom settings as well as gardens, greenhouses, and other outdoor environments. The educator works with soils and plants year-round while teaching hands-on gardening activities, with outdoor tasks typically aligned with the seasonal gardening cycle. Seasonal responsibilities include preparing beds, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing produce, pest management, and composting, which require bending, kneeling, reaching, and using tools and equipment. The role also involves lifting and transporting garden supplies, equipment, and produce.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working or volunteering with youth.

  • Knowledge of propagating, cultivating, harvesting, packing and storage of various vegetables and herbs. 

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research – 75%

  • Deliver established garden-based learning educational programs.

  • Assist with other programs as assigned.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource and provide standard responses. 

  • Provide participants and others with related educational resources.

  • Foster acceptance of the program by maintaining good working relationships with community-based agencies and others to further enhance the program.

  • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community-based agencies, and others in a professional manner.

  • May assist in creation of lesson plans to deliver educational programs.

  • Assist with program evaluation efforts and making improvements as assigned.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction and Management – 5%

  • Assist in managing assigned programs.

  • Immediately reports unique and/or emergency situations to supervisors.

  • Coordination and Operation – 15%

  • Prepare garden beds, seeding, transplanting crops, weeding, managing pests, growing, harvesting, and processing vegetables & herbs, winterizing beds.

  • Assist with running Harvest Share and a community farm stand.

  • Complete and submit all required reports, records (e.g., incident reports, expense reports, etc.) in a timely manner.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
