Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schenectady County’s nutrition and food programs help local residents improve their health and prevent disease through hands-on learning about healthy eating, cooking, and food gaps and trends.

Program areas may include topics like community nutrition, food systems, farm-to-school efforts, and other initiatives that support access to healthy, affordable food. The Educator may also lend support to other nutrition programs as needed, helping the Association respond to new opportunities and community priorities.

The Educator works closely with community partners, funders, and Cornell University program teams to plan, deliver, and evaluate educational programs. This role also helps with grant writing and reporting, serves on advisory groups, and contributes ideas that shape the direction of local nutrition and food initiatives. The Educator works both independently and as part of a collaborative, flexible team dedicated to meeting community needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.  Bachelor’s degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant experience may substitute for a master’s degree.

  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.

  • Ability to develop, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based nutrition education to participants.

  • Ability to meet the regular travel requirements associated with the position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

  • Ability to effectively manage interns.

  • Technology Skills - Microsoft Office suite, database, and internet software.

  • Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with staff, community leaders, program participants, and others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree or coursework in nutrition, health education, and/or public health.

  • Experience with farm-to- school and Policies, Systems, and Environments (PSE)

  • Knowledge of nutritional needs for various audiences.

Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities:

Program Assessment and Development – 15%

  • Assist with program development efforts.

  • Assist in maintaining direct linkage with funders and other partners for program development guidance.

  • Assist in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes.

Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research – 60%

  • Deliver nutrition education programs through a variety of educational methods.

  • Demonstrate meal preparation, recipes, and cooking techniques for target audiences.

  • Create lesson plans.

  • Serve as a subject matter resource; respond to questions.

  • Meet or exceed targeted program delivery goals to help ensure inclusive, robust, sustained program participation reaching target audiences.

  • Utilize evidence-based curricula and support materials to provide accurate, relevant nutrition education.

  • Serve as a liaison with other partner organizations, attend meetings, etc.

  • Foster acceptance of the program, methods, and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.

  • Collaborate with community agencies and help make connections to other Extension programs and community resources.

  • Represent CCE to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University in a professional manner.

  • Help evaluate the program and make recommendations for improvements.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction and Management – 15%

  • Assist supervisor in planning and managing programs. 

  • Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts.

Coordination and Operation – 5%

  • Complete documentation as required by program and funders.

  • Maintain program participant confidentiality.

  • Attend team and staff meetings, report expenses timely, work with other staff and volunteers, perform general marketing of Extension programs. 

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a part-time, nonexempt position, 30 hours/week. Compensation paid at the rate of $32.23 per hour.  Excellent benefits, based on eligibility, including:
