Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.Applies standard engineering techniques to collect, aggregate, and analyze data measuring the performance and reliability of propulsion systems and components to or improve design, producibility, and efficiencies. Evaluates and analyzes propulsion systems to establish environments and ensure that hardware is appropriately specified for those environments. Identifies trends in technical performance or reliability and prepares reports detailing these trends as well as anticipated impact or cost to the organization. Develops, releases, and supports engineering artifacts across the development cycle to support hardware design, fabrication, assembly, verification, test, and operations.
As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will be working as the System Thermal Analyst of the BE-7 in-space engine. You will be working with the Engines Thermal Analysis group among experts in heat transfer and flow network modeling. Growing your engineering knowledge and system understanding as you go, you will directly contribute to the design and qualification of the most advanced liquid rocket engines being developed today. You will participate in all stages of rocket engine development, from concept through detailed design and test support.
Your responsibilities might include building and evaluating large-scale assembly models suitable for quantifying subsystem interactions and ancillary component environments or performing detailed subcomponent finite element analyses to resolve local temperatures and gradients on valves, injectors, chambers, nozzles, thrusters, igniters, and related components. You will predict the thermal states of rocket engine components and assemblies through mission transients to aid performance and structural analyses, directly impacting engine performance and safety. Relying on your fundamentals in heat transfer, you will anchor thermal models to test data and make recommendations for updated instrumentation suites on subsequent test campaigns.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and maintain system-level thermal analysis models of rocket engines at varying levels of maturity and detail.
Monitor and incorporate vehicle hardware updates, CONOPs changes, interface modifications, and other relevant thermal interface developments
Incorporate system-level requirements into clear technical direction for system and component thermal analysis
Meticulous bookkeeping of model status and changes through time
Document and peer review thermal analyses and design results
Report results of analyses and design specifics to internal management and external customers
Work and execute independently with minimal technical oversight and general direction
Contribute to Communities of Practice on best practices and analysis methodologies.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline with 5+ years of experience performing thermal/fluid analysis or Master’s degree in an engineering discipline with 3+ years of experience performing thermal/fluid analysis
Experienced Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT user
Solid understanding of heat transfer, flow, and thermodynamic first principles
Experience correlating thermal models to test and/or flight data
Good communication skills and proficiency with productivity tools
Preferred:
Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in an engineering discipline with a focus on thermal or fluid sciences
7-10+ years of experience performing thermal/fluid analysis
Design, analysis and integration experience of spacecraft and rocket engine thermal systems
Experience using thermal analysis tools (SINDA/G, SINDA/FLUINT, TSS)
Knowledge of Fortran, Python and MATLAB
Rocket Engine and/or spacecraft/satellite background with experience through the entire system lifecycle from concept, design, production, integration, test, launch and operation support
Knowledge surrounding cryogens and phase change heat transfer
Prior experience in thermal/fluid testing and instrumentation definition
