This role is a valuable part of our Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) team, which is committed to achieving our mission of delivering innovative cell and gene therapies to patients. As a member of this team, you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with key stakeholders in Process Development, Analytical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality.

The Opportunity:

As an Automation/Senior Automation Engineer, you will play a key role in developing, implementing, and optimizing automation solutions to support emerging cell and gene therapy manufacturing. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and ensure alignment with regulatory and quality standards to advance our mission of delivering transformative therapies to patients. Additionally, you will:

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of automated control systems to support cell and gene therapy manufacturing processes.

  • Partner with stakeholders, including Process Development, Analytical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality teams, to identify and address automation needs.

  • Support the integration, testing, and validation of new automation technologies and systems to ensure scalability and reliability.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve automation system issues to minimize downtime and maintain operational excellence.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including functional specifications, system designs, and validation protocols.

  • Monitor, analyze, and improve automated systems to enhance process control, safety, and compliance with quality standards.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in automation, providing technical guidance and training to cross-functional teams on system functionality and best practices.

Who you are: Note that this position can be hired as either Automation or Senior Automation Engineer, depending on candidate qualifications.

  • You possess a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field, with 2-4 years of experience in automation engineering within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology manufacturing industry.

  • You have demonstrated experience managing diverse stakeholders and building strong partnerships across Process Development, Analytical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality functions.

  • You have experience working in a matrixed environment, coordinating cross-functional projects, and managing competing priorities effectively.

  • You possess experience working with automation platforms and systems, such as SCADA, DCS, and PLCs, with a focus on supporting complex manufacturing processes.

  • You have an understanding of FDA regulations, cGMP standards, and compliance requirements for pharmaceutical or biotechnology production.

  • You are able to serve as a member of the 24/7 Rotational On Call Support Team. 

Preferred Experience:

  • Cell/gene therapy industry experience.

  • Experience working in an environment utilizing change control and good documentation practices.

  • Experience with Rockwell and Emerson Automation technologies. 

  • Experience developing automation solutions. 

  • Experience interpreting electrical schematics and P&ID drawings. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Oregon is $80,500 - $149,500.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed in this link.
