Position Summary

The Applied Behavioral Scientist will report to the Director of Behavioral Science. In this role, you will apply behavioral science frameworks to digital product experiences– shaping interventions, adapting messaging, and making practical recommendations to lead users to take action for better health. You’ll bring an experimentation and outcomes mindset – using prototypes, data, or scrappy pilots to understand what works, why, and how we can continuously guide behavior at scale. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys thinking holistically – integrating evidence, communication, and execution – and wants to grow as a multidisciplinary problem-solver.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Framework translation: conduct and stay on top of secondary research (literature reviews, competitive landscape, and expert synthesis); develop and adapt behavioral science frameworks (e.g., COM-B) into clear, usable tools for product, UX, and content teams
  • Rapid experimentation: collaborate with partners to test behavioral interventions through A/B tests, pilots, or quick experiments – with a focus on feasibility and learning
  • Framing and copy support: apply behavioral tactics to copywriting – refining messaging, CTAs, or tone to better align with user motivations and cultural context.
  • Intervention design: work backward from desired user outcomes or business goals to identify high-leverage behavioral tactics; recommend behaviorally-informed changes to product flows, content, or notifications across markets and various health use-cases
  • Education and Influence: help socialize behavioral concepts internally through visuals, write-ups, or brief presentations to build understanding and buy-in
  • Cross-functional communication: Distill complex ideas into formats that resonate across teams (product, design, research, leadership)

  • Ability to quickly identify win-win opportunities, understand needs and priorities of different stakeholders, manage expectations, deescalate challenging dynamics with a view of short and long-term aims
  • Highly collaborative with an approach and ability to manage multiple internal and external stakeholders towards a shared goal.
  • Experience working in multi-lingual or global product environments
  • Able to function independently while coordinating closely with the larger team
  • Thrives in a highly dynamic and changing work environment, and are able to balance the strategic and tactical

Qualifications/Skills

  • Advanced degree in behavioral science, psychology, cognitive science, behavioral economics or related field
  • 3-5+ years applying behavioral science in real-world product/industry (e.g., health, finance). Experience in health tech, wellness, or behavior change oriented apps is especially valued.
  • Experience designing or contributing to product experimentation, interpreting behavioral outcomes, and iteration based on results
  • Strong data fluency – comfortable working with survey data, dashboards, and basic analytic tools
  • Demonstrated ability to connect the dots from behavior across research, strategy, and operations
  • Previous experience and comfort with shaping unstructured problems, with an outcome driven mindset
  • Strong communication skills; Experience working in a multi-lingual or global product environment
  • Familiarity with design collaboration tools (e.g. Figma, Miro)

Physical/Mental Demands and Working Conditions

  • Work is generally performed in an office environment.
  • This position will be performed in an office setting. The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Complete access to confidential company data where disclosure may jeopardize the company’s competitive position. 
  • There may be significant travel to develop and manage to business goals

Compensation for this role, for candidates based in Mountain View, CA is expected to be between $180,000 ~ $210,000.
