Applications Architect – Modernisation

**Due to the customer requirements successful applicants must be eligible for high level UK Security clearance. Frequent travel to DXC & Customer sites.**

Role Summary

As part of our overall investment and growth strategy in the UK we are hiring experienced Application Architects to join our team.

  • The Application Modernisation Architect is responsible for leading the transformation of legacy applications into modern, scalable, and cloud-native solutions. This role involves assessing existing systems, designing future-state architectures, and guiding development teams through the implementation of modern technologies and practices. The architect ensures alignment with business goals, technology standards, and security requirements.
  • Over time you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wider range of assignments, e.g Software development, platform automation, applications management, across a broad portfolio of client from many sectors e.g., Public Sector, Health, Finance, Energy, Transport, Retail, and Manufacturing, encompassing a wider range of business challenges.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Assessment & Strategy:
    • Evaluate legacy applications and infrastructure to identify modernisation opportunities.
    • Develop modernisation roadmaps aligned with enterprise architecture and business strategy.
    • Recommend appropriate cloud platforms, microservices architectures, and modernization patterns (e.g., rehost, refactor, rearchitect).
  • Architecture & Design:
    • Design scalable, resilient, and secure application architectures using modern technologies (e.g., containers, serverless, APIs).
    • Define integration strategies with existing systems and third-party services.
    • Ensure architectural decisions support DevOps, CI/CD, and agile delivery models.
  • Technical Leadership:
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, DevOps engineers, and business stakeholders.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship on modernisation best practices.
    • Lead proof-of-concept initiatives and technology evaluations.
  • Governance & Compliance:
    • Ensure solutions comply with enterprise security, data governance, and regulatory requirements.
    • Establish architectural standards and documentation for modernised applications.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in application modernisation.
    • Promote innovation and continuous improvement across the application portfolio.

Skills Required:

  • Proven experience in application architecture and modernisation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of public and hybrid cloud platforms.
  • Expertise in microservices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and API design.
  • Familiarity with legacy systems (e.g., monolithic applications, mainframes) and migration strategies.
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies
  • Awareness of emerging security issues
  • Awareness of emerging AI trends such as generative AI, large language models, and edge AI, and their impact on application architecture.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Certifications in cloud architecture (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
  • Experience with enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF).
  • Agile certification
