UMB’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) team is responsible for driving automation, data-driven decision making and software modernization using AI centric tools.  Currently, we leverage machine learning, natural language processing, predictive analytics, and generative AI to enhance customer experience, and improve operational efficiency.  This includes utilizing fraud protection software to ensure regulatory and system availability.

As the AI Application Developer, you will be responsible for building, deploying, and maintaining AI-powered applications that support critical financial services functions. This role involves hands-on development of APIs, microservices, and user-facing solutions that embed machine learning and generative AI capabilities into banking systems, payments, and customer channels. The AI Application Developer collaborates closely with architects, data scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and compliant AI applications that improve efficiency, customer experience, and regulatory outcomes.  This is a subset of the overall responsibilities which will include multiple initiatives as assigned by IT leadership. 

This role is hybrid (Mon through Thu on-site / Fri remote) at the UMB Tech Center located in downtown Kansas City, MO.

How you’ll spend your time:

  • Develop, test, and deploy AI/ML-powered applications and services for banking, payments, risk, and compliance functions.
  • Build APIs, microservices, and integration layers to embed AI models into enterprise applications and digital platforms.
  • Collaborate with data scientists to productionize AI models, ensuring scalability, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines and MLOps best practices for model deployment and lifecycle management.
  • Develop intelligent user-facing solutions such as chatbots, personalization engines, and fraud detection systems.
  • Ensure applications adhere to regulatory, security, and governance requirements in financial services.
  • Maintain documentation, version control, and code quality standards for AI applications.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement monitoring for AI-powered services.
  • Work with product managers and architects to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Stay current with AI development frameworks, libraries, and emerging trends

We’re excited to talk with you if:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field and at least 3 years of experience in software development with exposure to AI/ML applications, OR equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • You have strong programming skills in Python and at least one additional language (Java, .NET, or Node.js, etc.).
  • You have familiarity with cloud-native development and deployment (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • You have experience working with APIs, microservices, and containerization.
  • You have proficiency in AI/ML frameworks and libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • You have knowledge of RESTful API design, event-driven architectures, and integration patterns.
  • You have familiarity with MLOps practices and tools (MLflow, Kubeflow, SageMaker Pipelines).
  • You understand software testing, version control (Git), and CI/CD pipelines.

Bonus Points If:

  • You have a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related discipline and at least 5 years of experience in developing AI-powered or data-driven applications in financial services industry.
  • You have any of the following certifications: AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty, TensorFlow Developer, or Microsoft AI Engineer.
  • Experience building production-ready AI solutions in areas such as NLP, computer vision, or generative AI.
  • You have a background in regulatory or compliance-focused application development.
  • You have experience with conversational AI frameworks (Rasa, Botpress, Dialogflow).
  • You have knowledge of big data and streaming platforms (Kafka, Spark).
  • You have familiarity with AI observability and monitoring tools.
  • You understand security principles for AI applications (data encryption, IAM, adversarial testing).
  • You have exposure to legacy core banking integration with modern AI services.

Compensation Range:

$69,230.00 - $149,000.00

The posted compensation range on this listing represents UMB’s standard for this role, but the actual compensation may vary by geographic location, experience level, and other job-related factors.
