The GI2 Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) identifies, develops and delivers therapeutics for gastrointestinal and inflammatory conditions in collaboration with cross-functional teams at Takeda. The IBD group within the GI2 DDU is building an industry-leading portfolio of therapeutics that will be transformational to patient’s quality of life.
Our division sponsored program is designed to introduce students to a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work in a biotech-like environment where cross-functional research aims to discover and develop novel therapeutic agents that benefit patients. Students will capitalize on the synergy between industry and academia by working on projects that bridge these two domains. Students will be exposed to a fast-paced work environment, as well as opportunities to work with scientists from various disciplines and backgrounds.
How You Will Contribute:
Actively participate in the planning and execution of in vitro and/or ex vivo experiments
Work with primary human and/or murine gut cells
Leverage a combination of techniques (e.g. qPCR, ELISA, Western Blot, FACS, Immunofluorescence, etc.) to build out a robust data package
Analyze, interpret, and present your data to the team
Advance the understanding of the mechanism of action of a therapeutic target
Internship Development Opportunities:
Collaborate closely with seasoned bench scientists and disease area experts to develop our understanding of a therapeutic target
Gain practical exposure to drug discovery and therapeutics development
Explore creative approaches to disease biology
Job Requirements:
Must be pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Biology, Immunology, or a related field of study
This position requires full-time commitment, necessitating five days of on-site work in the Cambridge, MA area
Previous in vitro cell biology experience and an understanding of sterile technique is a must
Basic understanding of molecular biology techniques (qPCR, Western blot, ELISA, etc.) is required; FACS or Immunofluoresence imaging experience preferred
Some background in IBD disease biology preferred
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Attention to detail and good note-taking skills are a must
Internship Eligibility
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without requiring sponsorship
Must be currently enrolled in a degree program graduating December 2026 or later
The internship program is 10-12 weeks depending on the two start dates (May 26th-August 14th or June 15th- August 21st)
The intern must be able to commit to one of these time frames
Able to work full time 40 hours a week during internship dates
Takeda does not provide a housing stipend or relocation support for the U.S Summer Internship Program

The estimated hourly range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on the candidate’s school year/level to be entered following completion of internship. The actual hourly wage offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
